Do you have to be a CEO to be powerful?

What do you think a powerful woman looks like?

What does she act like?

  • Can she scale mountains with one-hand behind her back?

  • When people are unkind, does she put people in their place with snarky cutting words?

  • Does she do everything on her own in the name of fierce independence?

The truth is we don’t really have many strong examples of what a powerful woman is like…

I was thinking about this as I was getting ready for my presentation in Miami last week.

Whenever I am taking my work to the next level I double down on self-care. The day before I left for Miami, I was getting a massage at my favorite spa. All of sudden an image of my late grandmother floated into my mind and tears welled up in my eyes.

My parents both worked full-time jobs to take care of me and my siblings. So in many ways my grandmother raised me.

When I had a bad day at school, she was the first person I went to. She would listen to me. She made me feel seen.

She taught me how to cook. Buttery mashed potatoes and a T-Bone Steak was my favorite, she made it the best.

She was a powerful woman.

But, the average person might not immediately recognize her power.

She was a housewife with no education.

She took care of all the house duties. She folded laundry, made the beds and made sure my grandfather had a hot meal on the stove when he got home from a long day at work.

So what made her powerful?

She chose her life.

She charted her own path.

Her path just happened to be that of a housewife. And let me tell you, she loved it.

She was never a victim in her own life.

She never blamed unfulfilled dreams on her children, husband or society.

She was clear about what she wanted and she went after it.

That’s how an Empowered Woman acts.

You see you don’t have to be a CEO to be a powerful woman necessarily.

You don’t have to be out to change or save the world either.

Being powerful has nothing to do with your education, philanthropic tendencies, job or marital status.

Power starts with you taking responsibility and choosing your life, creating it on YOUR terms.

What would it mean for you to be powerful? What would that look like? What would it feel like? I’d love to hear from you.
